What is a Photo Collage?

collage z

The word collage is from the French. It literally means “pasting”, or “gluing”. Originally the word indicated an artistic medium. Pieces of paper, newspaper, cuttings, photographs, drawings and almost any form of abstract or textured additions. The “collage” is normally an arrangement of the pieces.

For our purposes, Photo Collage is a multi-image graphic created by a  digital and creative process.

Why Photo Collages Could Be Better Than Plain Photos or Paintings on Your Wall

From being introduced by Picasso and Braque in the early 20th century as a distinctive part of modern art to the digital collages of today, collages have certainly come a long way. Collage can be a painting technique, but it also has other forms including wood collage, decoupage in craft, photomontage, 3D collage, mosaic and digital collages. Kids sometimes associate collage with early school art where they collect and assemble different photos and colourful clippings. In this age, when photos are a great form of expression, collage can be a stylish way to decorate a wall.

A collage can tell a story

If you want to show your latest family trip, or your journey as a couple before getting married, creating a collage is a good way to do it without having to go overboard and frame lots of pictures. You simply pick your top choice of photographs to best describe how your trip or journey went.

A collage is an easy way to display a collection of photos

It can be difficult to choose just one photo to display, so a collage makes it simple and more convenient. In a single collection, you can show multiple images that tell about your family, your wedding, your baby’s first year, and more without having to frame and hang lots of pictures. For viewers, it is an interesting way to look at photos, especially if they come with a theme. Even businesses use photo collages in their digital content, to engage readers.
