Think of your website as a house.  Whether new or remodeled, we first work with you to come up with a blueprint. And a blueprint is most effective when the architect knows exactly what will go inside.  When your plans are finalized, we become your general contractor until construction is complete. Now, you furnish the content that engages your visitors and we’ll set it up and decorate it.

We can build it on your site, or we can host, maintain and secure your website, making minor renovations, updates, and changes when necessary using our Managed Host Plus service.

Plan and Create User-Focused Content

web page uc

The quality of a website’s content will determine the success or failure of visitors desire to engage in a relationship with your organization, product, or service.

A Website’s Content Serves Many Vital Functions, Including:

  • Selling Products and Services
  • Generating Leads
  • Driving Traffic to a retail establishment
  • Promoting a Cause
  • Gaining Membership
  • Conveying Compelling Marketing Messages to Your Target Audiences

Ideas For Developing Your Content

Value Proposition

Your website should answer the why and how of your organization, explaining how your services and process provide value to your clients or members. Your value proposition should address these things, and it should be unique from other organizations in similar industries so that you can differentiate yourself from others. Use this as a basis for the content you create for your website. Your unique value proposition should be prominent on your website and weaved throughout your content. Making sure that your content is targeted and relevant to the people you want to reach is critical to the success of your site.

Include the essential content

– Thought leadership blog
– Premium content (i.e. whitepapers, eBooks)
– Services/capabilities information
– Case studies and client testimonials
– Portfolio
– Compelling “about” page
– Team
– Employee spotlights
– Up-to-date job postings
– Process
– FAQs
– Videos (can feature company culture, client testimonials, etc.)

Map to the client lifecycle

Your content should also lead visitors and prospects down the sales funnel. Your website should have a variety of content that addresses different questions or concerns depending on where the prospect is in the client journey, from awareness to purchase to advocacy. For example, a blog is a great tool for building awareness, educating and answering general questions about your services or industry. But for a prospect who is evaluating your firm for hire, a case study or testimonial is more appropriate to demonstrate successful work that you’ve done for your clients.

Target each of your personas

When creating website content, firms often think about what they want to say instead of what their audience wants to read. It’s essential to create content for your website with your various audiences in mind and think about what’s most important to them, since that is who your content is truly for. Buyer personas help you visually picture the type of people you are trying to reach and better understand buyer behavior. By determining your key buyer personas, you can create personalized content that is targeted and relevant to their interests, needs and goals. Your content is meant to answer their questions, educate them on industry topics, and address their pain points. Remember that you have more than one audience, and your website should have content that caters to each one. In addition to prospects, you should create website content that is geared towards clients, prospective employees, business partners, the media, etc.

Develop a content schedule

Once you have established the type of content you need, it’s important to organize it and develop a strategic schedule to make sure it all gets accomplished. Decide if you want to first focus on a specific persona, a specific industry or a specific stage of the client lifecycle. After determining the type of content you want to create first, begin to map out a schedule. This includes the topics you will cover, how often you’ll be publishing and the dates it will be published. It may be beneficial to plan out one quarter of the year at a time.

Measure and track performance

The key to having a strong web content strategy is keeping it relevant to your audiences. This means constantly evaluating and tracking the performance of all of your content. Look at which pieces are being shared, which pages are getting the most views vs. those not getting much traction, and how long visitors are spending on each page. This will help determine where you are resonating with your audiences and delivering valuable content, and where you need to do things differently. Keep your website fresh and relevant with a defined strategy for creating new content moving forward.

Structure

Structure refers to the way in which the different elements of a web page or website are put together. In the web industry, we often use tools such as sitemaps and wireframes to define a site’s structure. You can think of a sitemap like an architectural plan.

A wireframe defines the structure of an individual web page (micro-level) and is a schematic drawing of a web page, showing where the main elements of the page sit. Wireframes show only the relative size and position of content and functions; they do not include visual elements like color or images, nor do they contain real blocks of text. You can think of a wireframe like a pencil sketch.

And if we’re renovating or rebuilding your website, we’ll perform a Site Speed Audit, and a Site SEO Audit.

Function

A function is an action-oriented part of a website: for example, a shopping cart, enquiry form, or download button. Functions always relate to actions that we want our website users to perform, and it’s important to know what these are, and what priority each function has, from the beginning. Functions are enabled and restricted by the technology we use. As a web developer, we create the functions as defined by the purpose and misson of your organization.

In some cases, we can embed functions from other systems into your website. For example, you may want us to embed a YouTube video player into a web page, or you might need a newsletter signup function. These types of portable functions are often called widgets, plugins or just plain “embeds”.

Aesthetics

As mentioned, many people would refer to this last element as “design”. However, as other components such as structure (the size and placement of things) and content (photographs or length of text) also play a role in “design”, I prefer to use the term “aesthetics” to narrow our focus down to the way things look and feel. This means we are talking about colors, fonts, and graphic elements such as lines and patterns, not content or structure.

The “feel” part of look and feel is quite important, but harder to define. This is the tricky bit: it refers to how the website appeals to your emotions. Authoritative, refreshing, playful, vibrant or Zen are just a few examples of emotive words that can describe a site’s “feel” or overall impression. These words can be critical in helping you choose colors, fonts and other visual elements to fit with your desired impression. They will also play a role in content choices, such as types of photography, tone of voice, and writing style.

Websites are built using Divi on WordPress and include these free standard plugins: Jetpack, Redirection, WP-optimize, W3 Total Cache, Akismet Spam Protection, and WooCommerce (for eCom sites). Other plugins can be discussed during the design process. Websites under Managed Hosting Plus receive some additional professionally licensed plugins.
